Types of Radio Bands

Walkie-talkies are used for many different purposes. Depending upon the purpose, walkie-talkies operating on a certain radio frequency may best suit you. Listed below are the different types of radio frequencies used for communication. These radio bands include the Citizens\' Band Radio, Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service, and ham radio. The FCC has designated each type for specific uses.

Citizens\' Band (CB) Radio:
CB radio is good for short distance communication. It takes advantage of 40 channels in the 27MHz band. The CB band is often used by truck drivers, and does not require a license for its use. The Citizens\' Band features a communication range of about 1-5 miles. Channel 9 is generally designated for emergencies and assistance.

Family Radio Service (FRS):

FRS radio is a radio band mainly used by amateurs that does not require a license. It is the first and only \"UHF CB\". With a range of about two miles, it makes for good use in a neighborhood or group outings. The FCC also allows this band to be used for business activity. There are a total of 14 channels. Walkie-talkies that operate on FRS radio are usually low-cost devices.

General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS):

GMRS is a \"UHF radio service\" similar to FRS radio in many ways with the exception of a few differences. An FCC operator\'s license IS required to communicate on the GMRS radio band. The average range is nearly up to 5 miles. Its intended purpose is for use by immediate family members. GMRS radio shares some of its frequencies (channels) with FRS radio.

Ham Radio:

Ham radio is an amateur radio band used by over 3 million people in the world. A license is required for its use, but it features the ability to talk to anyone in the world!
