Keyloggers can be either hardware or software. Their main purpose is to "log" everything you type on your keyboard including sensitive information such as passwords, names and even credit card numbers.

Keyloggers have many perfectly acceptable uses. For example, a parent may see what his kids are doing online, a boss can see whether his employees are working or not and the government may retrieve important information to deal with crime. Despite this, keyloggers can be used for many malicious purposes.

It is important to understand that keyloggers are advancing very hastily. For example, a few years ago the first external (hardware) keylogger was released to the market. This means that anyone with physical access to your computer may easily connect a keylogger to your keyboard to be later retrieved... with all your information.
