How Walkie Talkies Work

Walkie-talkies work in fairly simple manner. Through the use of frequencies, communication is possible. Simply push and hold the button on the walkie-talkie while you talk into the walkie-talkie's microphone. This sound is then transmitted through the air using radio waves. These radio waves are then picked up by another walkie-talkie, and turned back into sound.

Six Parts of a Walkie-Talkie:

  • Transmitter - Sends your voice to another walkie-talkie after turning it into radio waves.
  • Receiver - Receives the radio waves sent out by the transmitter.
  • Speaker - Amplifies the sound received by the receiver.
  • Microphone - This part attains your voice and converts it into a electric signal.
  • Crystal - Also known as a channel, it sets the frequency used for communication (more info below).
  • Power Source - The power supply is usually from batteries.

Most walkie-talkies feature the option to change channels. This avoids people having to use the same channel for communication. Unfortunately, people can access the channel that you are talking on. As a result, do not discuss confidential things because others may be listening.
